Marana Big PHAT Band

Come sit in.

We rehearse Tuesday evenings in northwest Tucson. You don't have to be a professional — you do need to read a chart and show up.

Open Chairs

Updated August 2026

Here's where the band actually stands right now. We keep this current, so if a part says open, it's open.

  • Open chair We need someone now
  • Subs wanted Section is covered, building a bench
  • Full Not auditioning at the moment
  • Trombone

    Open chair

Two chairs open, including bass trombone. This is our priority right now — a two-piece bone section is doing the work of four.

  • Saxophone

    Subs wanted

Section is full across alto, tenor and bari. We'd like a few reliable subs on file for when someone travels.

  • Trumpet

    Subs wanted

Six players on the roster. Lead-capable subs especially welcome.

  • Rhythm — piano, guitar, bass, drums

    Subs wanted

One player per part, so a sub bench matters more here than anywhere else. If you can cover a rhythm chair on short notice, we want to know you.

  • Vocals

    Full

Not auditioning right now, but we'll update this page when that changes.

Not seeing your instrument, or seeing "full" next to it? Get in touch anyway. Rosters move, and we'd rather know you exist.

What We're After

We're a community ensemble, not a professional band — people come on Tuesday nights because they love this music. That said, twenty-one players only sound good together if everyone holds up their end.

  • Reads a chart at tempo
  • Plays well inside a section
  • Comfortable improvising, or willing to learn
  • Shows up consistently

Our book runs from the sixties through today — classic rock, funk, disco, pop and straight-ahead jazz, all arranged for full big band. If you've only ever played standards, expect a wider range than you're used to.

Rehearsals

  • When: Tuesday evenings, 7:00–9:00 PM, year round
  • Where: Northwest Tucson — we'll send the address once we've been in touch
  • Dues: $50 per year, which covers music and operating costs
  • Bring: Your instrument, a stand if you have one, and a pencil

We play roughly a handful of concerts a season across Tucson, Marana, Oro Valley and Green Valley. Most are afternoon or early-evening shows.

Under 18? You're welcome to audition — we have high school players in the band. Please have a parent or guardian make the first contact with us, and plan on them coming along to your first rehearsal.

How It Works

No tape, no prepared solo, no panel. It's less formal than the word "audition" makes it sound.

  1. Send us a note

Use the form below or email join@maranabigphatband.com. Tell us your instrument and roughly what you've played before. That's enough to start.

  2. We'll get back to you with a date

We'll confirm there's a chair worth talking about, send you the rehearsal address, and pick a Tuesday that works.

  3. Sit in with the section

You'll play a normal rehearsal alongside the section you'd join — a few charts, sight-read. This is mostly so you can find out whether you like us, too.

  4. We follow up that week

Our conductor will be in touch either way. If it's a fit, you're in the book from the next rehearsal.
